Agenda:
Topic: The Venture Capital Marketplace: Pre- and Post-COVID

Speaker: Terry Moore, founder and Managing Partner of Moore Venture Partners

CPE credit: 1.0 hour

The venture capital industry responds differently to the changing economy in the U.S. and the rest of the world. When the credit crunch and financial markets crashed over twelve years ago, the ability of entrepreneurial companies to raise capital took a body blow. Early stage funding and development capital largely dried up, as each source of capital seemed to take refuge in ratcheting itself up a notch higher on the conservatism scale. But then as the recovery took hold, the venture capital market rebounded nicely from the days of the Great Recession, and was back thriving in just about all markets.

Ths year, 2020, has been most unusual. With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and the highly politicized environment of a unique election year, following our economy can sometimes feel like tracking the Brownian motion of an erratic sine wave on acid. In many ways, we won't be able to know what's happened until the year is over, the masquerade is played, and we can look back with 20/20 hindsight. But what do we know now? What is venture money doing, and what is the outlook of the investors behind the venture funds?

Come hear Terry Moore -- whose long-term vision and mission has been to rebuild venture capital in San Diego -- discuss the state of venture capital today. Terry has successfully built three venture funds as part of Moore Venture Partners, and is in the process of building his fourth. He leverages his extensive relationships built over the last 25+ years, with both top-tier VC firms in Silicon Valley and with top private and corporate investors in San Diego as well as globally, to bring their deep pockets, entrepreneurial zeal and strategic interests to our community’s future top technology and life sciences companies.

This presentation will discuss the history, the current state, the economic importance of venture capital in our community and a look into the future.

In his talk, Terry will cover a number of areas, including:

- The importance of venture capital to our community
- Recent history of venture capital in San Diego, California and the country
- Industry overview, highlights, trends
- Where the money has been going, liquidity, and exits
- How the spiky coronavirus has caused spikes or dips in the VC market
- Effects of a presidential election year -- and THIS election -- on the market
- An entrepreneurial search for VC money today versus 5-10 years ago
- MVP's own journey through the VC world
- Planning for success -- tried, true and new VC fund models.

We'll have an unparalleled opportunity, with our usual interactive Q&A, to pick the brain of one of the best-known and most knowledgeable players in San Diego's venture community.

About our Speaker:
Terry Moore has over 25 years of experience investing, founding, leading, directing, and advising companies. He has been in business both as an engineer and as an entrepreneur. As a senior engineer in the Advanced Technology Group at General Atomics, he developed Spacecraft Thermal Barrier Control Coatings used on satellites to conduct the waste heat away from the electronic black boxes. He has had CEO experience, and has served on the Board of Directors of numerous companies in various stages of growth, development and operation.

Terry is the founder and Managing Partner of Moore Venture Partners, the MVP VC Funds™, L.P. (www.moorevp.com) in San Diego, investing in the next most successful tech and life science companies at their early stages, growth periods and expansion phases. He is the founder and Chairman of The VC Roundtable (www.thevcroundtable.com) of Southern California, an invitation-only investor and entrepreneur networking organization that he founded in 2002. In the past, he has been the founder and chair of the Annual VC Regatta in San Diego. He has also been on the CNBC TV show “Make Me A Millionaire Inventor.”

Terry has an MBA in Venture Management and Marketing from the University of San Diego, and a B.S. in Engineering and Materials Science from the University of Florida, and successfully completed a nine-month long post-graduate Entrepreneurship Program at SD CONNECT in 1994. And when not working at any of the above activities, rumor has it that Terry can occasionally be found hiking, sailing, or surfing -- staying healthy from the coronavirus so he can help keep his portfolio companies healthy, growing and succeeding!

This will be an enlightening talk, with active Q&A and lots of facts, insights and anecdotes. Venture capital is one of finance's more exciting areas. It is an area with which many of us have had to deal in the past when raising money for our companies, and an area many more of us will deal with in the future.

Our speaker will be Terry Moore, founder and Managing Partner of Moore Venture Partners, and one of San Diego's newest and most interesting venture capitalists. Terry will give us a look at the Venture Capital Marketplace and Outlook -- past trends, where we are today, where the market is going.
