The Power of Networking in Your Job Search

In today’s competitive job market, networking remains one of the most effective tools for uncovering opportunities. Building strong connections can open doors to the hidden job market, where many roles are filled through referrals and word-of-mouth long before they’re publicly posted.

Whether you’re exploring new career paths, actively seeking your next role, or simply expanding your professional circle, networking provides:

  • Access to opportunities not found on job boards
  • Insights and advice from peers who have navigated similar transitions
  • Support and encouragement during the ups and downs of the job search
    • Name and professional identity
    • Brief career summary, key skills, and industry experience
    • The specific role(s) or types of opportunities you’re targeting
    • Industry or company preferences, geographic considerations, or remote options
    • Types of contacts, companies, or industries you want introductions to
    • A clear call to action or specific ask

This month’s meeting will focus on networking, giving everyone the chance to share their 90-second introduction, their networking experiences, job leads, and strategies while growing meaningful connections within our community.

Come Prepared with Your Written 90-Second Introduction

Your introduction is your opportunity to make a memorable impression and help others understand how they can support your job search. Here’s a simple structure to follow:

  1. Who You Are (20-30 seconds)
  2. What You’re Looking For (30-40 seconds)
  3. How Others Can Help (20-30 seconds)

Example:
"Hi, I’m Sarah Thompson, a seasoned finance leader with 18 years in healthcare and nonprofit sectors, specializing in budgeting, strategic planning, and operational efficiency. I’m currently seeking a CFO or VP of Finance role within a mission-driven organization in the tri-state area, with a focus on community impact. My strength lies in guiding organizations through financial turnarounds and growth strategies. If you know of nonprofits expanding their leadership teams or need guidance on fiscal restructuring, I’d greatly appreciate an introduction. Thank you!"

All attendees should be prepared to ask questions and provide feedback.

Come ready to connect, share, and help each other move forward!

About Lew Bader:

Lew Bader is Chair of the Long Island Chapter of The FENG and co-chair of The FENG Peer Resume Review Committee. After a 40-year career with Fortune 500 companies, Lew found himself facing the job market for the first time at the age of 62. Over the next two years, he meticulously developed a job hunting toolkit that eventually led him to his current role as the Chief Financial Officer at Counseling In Schools, a New York City-based non-profit organization.

Lew also takes pride in his long-standing relationship with Matt Bud, noting humorously that he was likely the last of Matt’s friends to join The FENG in 2014, a connection that dates back to 1980.
